Then think about seating. A good rule of thumb is 24 inches of table edge per person. A five-foot rectangular table seats six comfortably. The extension mechanisms in well-made Canadian tables are smooth and sturdy, and the leaves are finished at the same time as the top so the grain and colour match properly. It is worth asking about self-storing leaves that tuck away inside the table itself, since a leaf stored in the basement tends to age differently from the table it belongs to. If you entertain even a few times a year, the extension option is one of the most practical choices you can make.

What is the best wood for a dining table?

There is no single best wood, but there is a best wood for your household, and it helps to know the character of each. Maple is dense, smooth, and highly resistant to dents, which has made it the traditional favourite of families with young children. Oak has a bold, open grain that hides everyday wear gracefully and suits everything from traditional rooms to modern farmhouse looks. Cherry is smooth and refined, and it is famous for deepening into a rich, warm reddish brown as it ages. Walnut is the darkest of the four, prized for natural chocolate tones that need very little stain at all.

The finish matters just as much as the species. Rectangular, round, or square?

Shape is easier to decide than most people expect, because the room usually decides for you. Rectangular tables suit most spaces and seat the most people for their footprint, which is why they remain the standard. Round tables are wonderful in square rooms and smaller spaces, and they have a warmth of their own, since everyone at a round table faces everyone else. A four-foot round seats four; a five-foot round seats eight when it needs to. Square tables work best in generous square rooms and are less efficient everywhere else. When in doubt, match the table's shape to the room's.

Do not overlook the chairs

Chairs take more use than the table itself, so their construction deserves equal attention. Look for solid wood frames with proper joinery rather than bolted legs, which loosen with years of use. From there, the choices are pleasant ones. Chairs from the same collection give a classic, unified look, while a contrasting stain or an upholstered seat brings something more current. A bench along one side is worth considering for a family table, since it tucks completely under the table between meals and always seems to find room for one more child at the holidays.
